-- In Character Information
Name: Juliet Angelica Jewkes
Birthday & Age: 2 June, 1983; 27
Marital Status: Single
Blood Status: Half-blood
Sexuality: Straight

Social Stereotype: The Friendly-to-a-Fault Actress

House & Alumni Year: Hufflepuff 2001
Residence: 4 Vance Circle (F14) with best friends Milly Dunstan and Natalie McDonald
Career: Juliet is a stage actress. After attending the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts (WADA), she began auditioning for roles in stage productions across wizarding Britain. She is more or less a regular at the Pleiades Theatre in Dunmoody. Acting is her passion, so she will audition for any role, and there is no such thing as a "small role" to her. To earn some extra money when not on stage, she teaches voice lessons to children.
Family:
  • Father: Alexander Jewkes; half-blood; former Gryffindor; has a sports news show "On the Pitch With Alex Jewkes," on the WWN news channel, and will occasionally write for the Daily News.
  • Mother: Charlotte Jewkes née Poke; half-blood; former Hufflepuff; [job]
  • Sister: Jillian Elisabeth Jewkes; half-blood; Hufflepuff 2000; Healer
  • Brother: Spencer Jewkes; half-blood; Ravenclaw 2002

Personality: Juliet is pretty much your typical, quintessential friendly girl. You won't often find her with a negative word to be said about anyone or anything. She's sweet and kind, a hopeless romantic who dreams of (and fully believes in) True Love, and she's never once in her life uttered a swear word (unless it was called for in the script). She's always willing to give someone another chance, even after they've burned through plenty of chances already. There's something good in everyone, in Jules' opinion, you just have to be willing to look for it. Even seeing the horrible things her classmates did to each other under the Carrows' rule at Hogwarts during the war, she refuses to believe that anyone could truly be evil, positive that there must be some positive, redeeming quality about them (not that she doesn't think they deserved their punishments, because she definitely thinks they did).

Unfortunately, her friendliness and willingness to give people extra chances often leads to her being taken advantage of. It's very easy to get on her good side and stay there, and she's willing to do a lot for a friend, which can be easily exploited by people who are willing to use that. Even if you somehow manage to get on her bad side (though there are those who would argue that Jules has no "bad side" to speak of!), it's very easy to get back on her good side. She's usually willing to concede her side in arguments and tends not to complain if something is bothering her, preferring to keep the peace. She's very much a people-pleaser, wanting everyone to be happy to the point of putting others' happiness ahead of her own. Of course, she'll be quick to point out that she's happiest when her friends and family are happy.

Of course, nobody can keep everything in and push everything aside and put everyone else ahead of themselves all the time. Instead of exploding when it gets to be too much, though, Jules implodes. She starts worrying and babbling and getting visibly upset (tears, wibbly pouty lips), inevitably completely stressing herself out and needing to take some time away to let everything out and re-orient herself. In situations like these, she won't actively seek out company, though she greatly appreciates if her friends take care of her for a change when she's like this.

Even when it comes to her acting, she just doesn't have what it takes to be cut-throat. She'd never sabotage another actress' audition to get ahead, and she genuinely means it when she wishes others luck. She's not the "do anything (wink wink) for a role" type, either. Acting is her passion, and she's determined to do well at it by her own merit. Large or small, the role she earns in a production doesn't matter to her so much as doing what she loves: acting. No matter the role she has in the show, she puts her whole heart into doing the best job she can with it. She is at her best when she has a character that she can disappear into.

Despite how absolutely comfortable Jules is on stage as an actress, she is utterly shy when it comes to being herself on stage, singing. Singing is her secondary passion after acting, and she does have quite the voice. But she is absolutely terrified of being up on stage as herself; at least when she is acting, she has slipped into a role and can be someone else up there. While she can handle criticism of her acting, she just can't handle the possibility of criticism of her singing.

A late bloomer, Jules also has some slight body issues. Having been small and scrawny and awkward and flat as an ironing board for most of her adolescence, she felt that boys didn't notice her because she had no body. When she suddenly blossomed in seventh year, gaining the curves and everything that she had long dreamed of having, she was suddenly confused as to what to do with this new body. And despite having wanted attention from boys, she suddenly found that she definitely didn't enjoy the kind of attention that she was now getting. It's been a slow process, but she's starting to get more comfortable in her own skin, though she still feels like that same awkward teenager she was.

Canon Information: Juliet herself is an original character, but the Jewkes name canonically comes from the Quidditch Through the Ages book: Leonard Jewkes was a broom-maker who created the Silver Arrow broomstick in the early 1900s. Additionally, there is canon information in her mother's family, the Pokes: Royden Poke worked in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and was part of the meeting-turned-riot with the Brotherhood of Goblins in Chipping Clodbury.

Personal History: Juliet Jewkes was born the middle child and second daughter of Alexander and Charlotte Jewkes, following older sister Jill by exactly a year and a month, and followed shortly by younger brother Spencer. Because the three children were born so close together, they grew up very close, though of course they fought like any set of siblings. Being the middle child, with an exhuberant older sister like Jill, Jules sometimes felt like she had to fight to stand out and be noticed. She was a happy and friendly child, of course, but she was more reserved than her sister, which made it easy to be overshadowed.

Her very early years at Hogwarts, and her later ones, were great for Jules. Having always loved to act, she joined the drama club and got involved in the school plays, which only further nutured her love for the stage. There were a few years in there, though, her fourth and fifth, that were hell to her. Her fourth year was spent in a constant state of worry, dread, and fear. She saw her sister and best friend both get tortured for refusing to keep quiet about what the Professors Carrow were having the students do, which only further scared Juliet herself into staying quiet: she had a nearly-neurotic fear of being punished, so even though she hated some of the things she had to do in class, she tried it anyway. She was among the students evacuated to the Hog's Head during the Battle of Hogwarts, where she and Spencer waited anxiously for news of Jill, who had stayed behind to help heal the fighters.

Her fifth year was a little bit better, though with the school being repaired, everywhere she looked she saw reminders of the previous year and especially of the battle. She might not have returned to the school at all, if not for the fact that she dreamed of going to the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts to study theatre, and she knew she had to finish school first. Her sixth and seventh years were better, though she spent them mostly just focused on the future: finishing school and getting out of Hogwarts and never going back. And so far, she's stuck by that.

After graduating from Hogwarts, she went straight to WADA, where she spent the next three years studying acting with a minor in voice. Attending WADA only further cemented to Jules that acting was what she wanted to do with her life, though the minor in voice didn't do much, unfortunately, to help her with her stage fright when it came to singing. Still, it was a career as an actress that she sought, not one as a singer. Of course, trying to make a living as just a stage actress, especially one just out of school who was willing to take any part, wasn't all that easy. To make ends meet, she took on small part-time jobs, anything that would give her a flexible-enough schedule to have time for rehearsals and performances when she did get a job on stage.

When the opportunity arose to move in with her two best friends from Hogwarts, of course she jumped on it. Not only was there the practical reason of splitting costs with two other people, but there was, of course, the more important reason of once again being close to her friends. She and Milly had roomed together for all seven years at Hogwarts, and she and Natalie had roomed together while at WADA. So the three of them got a house together in Dunmoody, and Jules began regularly auditioning for roles at the local theatre. With costs on the house and bills and groceries now split with Milly and Natalie, Jules has cut back on her part-time jobs, focusing more on her acting and on the voice lessons that she has started teaching on the side.

Quirks, Features, & Habits:
  • She loves acting more for the sake of it than for the recognition -- but she does love being recognised!
  • She chews on the inside of her lower lip a lot. When she's nervous, when she's thinking, when she's bored ...
  • She loves her hair and keeps it on the longish side, but still short enough to be manageable and, if necessary, to pile up on her head and hide under a wig. But it still is a big production to get her to cut her hair.
  • All through school, she was relatively unendowed, so to speak. But in her seventh year, she suddenly blossomed, and she's still a little awkward about suddenly having a body. With breasts and curves and everything.
  • In fifth year, she made matching friendship bracelets for herself, Milly, and Natalie. She still wears hers all the time, except when she has to take it off to go on stage.
  • She has never sworn. Ever. (Except if she had to for a character. But that doesn't count.)
  • She is a worrier, particularly when it comes to her family and best friends. She's always worried they'll get hurt or something.
  • She is a romantic, and is holding out for her Prince Charming. Yes, this means she's still in possession of her V-Card.
  • She buys into some of the traditional theatre superstitions: don't say good luck, don't mention the name of The Scottish Play, etc. But she has a few of her own, as well: she can't eat anything blue on a performance day or anything red on a day she has an audition, she cannot practice her lines in front of a mirror until she has them memorised, and she will only drink either water or herbal hot teas with honey for the entire duration of a musical run.

RP Samples
1st Person Sample
A journal entry from when I played her as a fourteen-year-old.
3rd Person Sample
Log with her older sister Jill as the Battle of Hogwarts is about to begin (under the 5th horizontal line).

Note: If this is a reiteration of a character you’ve played before, feel free to link to existing samples. If a mod can vouch for you (or this is not your first character), the 3rd person sample is not required. Chances are we know you can write, so we’ll be more focused on your personality and history information more than anything. A 1st person will always be required.

Additional OOC Questions
Do you want your character to be directly affected by the overarching background New Salem plot or is this just a social character?: I think she'll mostly be just a social character.
Are there any of your character's NPC family and friends you'd like to offer up as New Salem cannon fodder?: I'd have to check with Carrie regarding the rest of the family, but from my end, that's totally fine.
